This forum is intended as a platform to bring people in the Alvin Independent School District (Alvin ISD) together in support of the construction of a new High School (currently called Alvin High School #3).
Is that because the buses stop at multiple locations within SCR before going to MHS? Do we know how many stops the average bus makes before it gets on the highway?
It is going to be a much longer time for communities deeper inside SCR like ours. That alone is reason enough to request a school closer to the SCR area.
I don't know about others, but we certainly don't have time to drive to Manvel (that's an additional 45 minutes every morning and another 45 minutes in the evening) because we work near the Galleria. That means my son will have to go by bus. Such a waste of time in a bus...especially in high school.
Yes, I think that is exactly why it takes so long. If you are driving straight to Manvel HS from SCR it is probably more like 15-20 minutes. I haven't driven the route in a while, so I am estimating.
One concern is how to manage extra curricular activities. It is my understanding that there is no "activity bus" for students who stay after school to participate. Perhaps that is a question we can ask Dr. Brent to comment on during the meeting.
That's 45 minutes extra on a bus when the child could be studying, doing extra curricular activities (swimming, piano, chess, etc) or just plain resting...before they tackle a whole evening of homework and classes.
And if you add up all that time they spend over the year - how much productivity is that?! Not to mention the amount of gas spent busing those kids, wear and tear and maintenance required on the buses, the amount of time parents spend coordinating pick up /drop offs from after school activities.
There has to be an easier way to do this - bring the school to SCR!
